Cleaning Tips for Removing the Most Stubborn Stains

Stain removal is a slightly tricky affair. Yet, there are some tips and tricks that work on major types of stains. However, not all methods may be effective for every stain or type of surface.

Prep the Ground For Safe Stain Removal

Pre-treating a stain with a proper solution can increase the likelihood of successful stain removal.

  • Start by removing any excess stained material from the surface through blotting or scraping.
  • Use absorbent wiping towels to avoid getting the stain deeply embedded.
  • Identify the type of surface, if the manufacturer’s instructions are provided, do a test on a small and hidden area before cleaning, and check for any reactions or discoloration.
  • When cleaning, precautions should be taken to keep other areas safe from accidental damage.

How to Remove

  • Grease and Oil Stains

Grease and oil stains can be really hard to remove, especially from fabrics and carpets. Baking soda is useful for removing stains and absorbing grease odors.

First, use absorbent paper or a clean cloth to wipe it out. Spread baking soda or cornstarch over the stain. Let the powder stay for 15 to 20 minutes. Either use a vacuum or a brush for sweeping. Squeeze a few drops of liquid soap or stain-specific detergent. Gently rub it and rinse with cold water.

  • Food Stains

Coffee/tea: Spray the mixture of white vinegar and water or 1 ammonia tablet diluted in water.

Ketchup/tomato: Apply multipurpose solvent. Use vinegar and eyedropper to remove the leftover dye. Flush the spot with cool water.

Ice cream stains: Rinse with cool water, use pre-wash stain removal, and soak in a sink filled with cool water and some detergent for a few minutes.

General Stain Removal Strategies

  • When the stains are being removed, they should be blotted with a clean cloth or paper towel. Avoid rubbing as it causes a stain to spread and even transfer deeper into the cloth.
  • When cleaning large spots, start from the edges and keep doing it until you reach the center. It also stops your stains from getting bigger.
  • Use cold water for most stains except food and beverage stains.
  • Be mindful not to use hot water or to heat the stained surfaces if not recommended
