Considering that mites, allergens, and pet dander naturally are very much active in upholstered furniture, it makes sense to clean each piece regularly.
Before The Actual Cleaning Starts:
- Reposition furniture in the room to maximize the space available to process what to do.
- Take down hanging decors and secure draperies, bedding, upholstery skirts, (etc.) and other hanging materials.
- During the cleaning, all the breakable objects need to be removed to avoid getting damaged.
- Remove anything on the top of heavy furniture bases that may fall if knocked over.
Step 1: Round up Your Supplies
You will need a vacuum, cleaning brush, microfiber cloth, steam cleaner, and detergent/fabric cleaning agent.
Step 2: Take Off the Cushion Covers
Remove covers such as slipcovers and foam cushions from upholstery and wash them before putting them back. Machine wash only when the manufacturer recommends it.
Step 3: Vacuum Well From Top to Bottom
Start vacuuming all surfaces where dirt can hide using a vacuum cleaner with attachments. Vacuum the chair, behind the armrests, and other furniture. Make sure to clean the wall, floor parts, and backsides, and then keep them under the cushions.
Step 4: Read Upholstery Code
Identify the right upholstery cleaner for your piece of furniture by reviewing the upholstery code on the label. If the label allows a gentle detergent and warm water mixture, then this might be a good choice to deep clean and freshen up your piece of furniture. Always make sure you spot-test to see if it could damage the color.
Step 5: Deal with the Stains
To begin with, do not completely immerse the affected area. Use a dry towel or a damp sponge with a solution of soapy water (containing the cleaning detergent) where there are any stains on the surface. Scrub gently with a brush with soft bristles.
Tip: Dab the spots with a moist towel – do not rub!
Step 6: Wipe the Area Clean
Rub thoroughly with a lint-free dry cloth to remove any leftover soapy residue.
Step 7: Allow It to Dry
Let the cushioning material breathe outside of any direct heat sources or sunlight, and do not use or place the furniture until it’s dry. Turn on a ceiling fan in the room to quicken it.
